This article describes how to delete cookie files in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera.
 Why you should delete cookies
Despite computer cookies are useful, they can also store such informattion as your name and password on protected login pages, preferences, account information and choices you have made on the site. So, even if you delete browser history, cookies like a map will show your surfing preferences, habits, passwords, etc. So to protect your privacy, you should constatly delete cookies.
Note: If you want to delete cookies for every user on your computer, you must repeat the appropriate steps when you are logged on as each user.
To protect your privacy, you should delete cookies and other Internet history tracks regularly.

 How to delete cookies in Internet Explorer
Delete cookies in Internet Explorer 7.0
• Select "Tools"
• Select "Internet Options".
• Open the "General" tab.
• In "Browsing history" area click the "Delete" button.
• In "Delete browsing history" window click "Delete cookies" button and then click "Yes".
• Click Close and then click OK.

If you want to check if you deleted all cookies:
• Select "Tools"
• Select "Internet Options".
• Open the "General" tab.
• In "Browsing history" area click the "Settings" button.
• Click "View Files" button. In the opened window you can see the folder where your cookie files are stored. Check that there are no .txt files in this folder.

Note:
1. In Internet Explorer even if you delete cookies manually, cookies index.dat file stores Internet surfing information. This file can't be deleted manually as it is used by Windows all the time.

2. Some websites store your member name, password, or other information about you in a cookie. If you delete cookies, you might need to enter your personal information again the next time you visit the site.

• Select "Tools"
• Select "Internet Options".
• Open the "General" tab.
• Click the "Delete cookies" button.
• Click OK.

 Cookies index.dat file
Every time a web site places a cookie on your PC, Internet Explorer and MSN Explorer insert an entry in the cookies index.dat file that associates a web page with a cookie file. And even if you delete cookies manually, cookies index.dat file stores Internet surfing information - URLs with date/time stamps and pointers to cookie files.
Attention! Cookies index.dat file can't be deleted manually as it is used by Windows all the time. Using ClearAllHistory you can easily delete index.dat files content or delete index.dat files.
If you want to delete cookies index.dat files manually (for Windows NT/2000/XP/2003) you should log in by another user with administrator privileges. If you don't have another account with administrator privileges, create a new one.
To create a new account:
1. Select Start -> Settings -> Control panel.
2. Select User Accounts.
3. Select "Create a new account" and enter necessary information.

Cookies index.dat file location - Windows 95/98/Me:
C:\Windows\Profiles\[username]\Cookies\index.dat
If you don't have Profiles directory:
C:\Windows\Cookies\index.dat
Note: on your computer Windows may be installed on another drive, in another directory.
Cookies index.dat files location - Windows 2000/XP:
\Documents and Settings\[username]\Cookies\index.dat

All index.dat files are hidden by default. To make index.dat files visible, you should enable Explorer to view hidden and system files:
1. Select Start -> Settings -> Control panel.
2. Select Folder Options.
3. In the "Folder Options" window open "View" folder.
4. In Advanced Settings open "Files and Folders" and
Select "Display the content of system folders"
Open "Hidden files and folders" and select "Show hidden files and folders"
5. Click OK

 How to delete cookies in Firefox

Delete cookies Firefox 2.0
• Select 'Tools -> Options'.
• Select "Privacy".
• In Private area click "Clear Now".
• In "Clear Private Data" window put the check mark for "Cookies" and click "Clear Private Data Now".
• Click OK.

Delete cookies Firefox 1.x
• Select 'Tools -> Options'.
• Select "Privacy".
• Open 'Cookies' tab and click "Clear CookiesNow".
• Click OK.

 How to delete cookies in Opera

Delete cookies Opera 9.0
• Open the Tools menu.
• Select Delete private data
• Click the "Details" button
• Select 'Delete cookies'.
• Click "Delete".

Delete cookies Opera 8.x
• Open the Tools menu.
• Select Preferences to open Dialog box.
• Open the Advanced tab.
• Select "Cookies".
• Click the "Manage Cookies" button.
• Select one or more cookies you want to delete and click the "Delete" button.
